A Changing of The Guard:
2023- In his own words, an Introduction to the new NWSAM Director- Dave Rawlings
.
As an Air Force brat, one is around airplanes whether one wanted to or not. In my case, I did. I never really got into building balsa planes until after my dad retired in 1965. Then it was a couple U-control but not scale.

It was while in high school that I built my first scale plane, a Goldberg 1/2A Skylane with a Golden Bee and single channel escapement. I flew that until I wore it out and went into the Navy.

While in the Navy, I built a Heathkit 8-channel radio and started a Sterling F-51 with an Enya .60. After the Navy, I moved onto a VK Dr-1. After I moved back home to Vancouver, WA. I attempted to maiden the F-51 and instantly re-kitted it. Mind you, this was with zero multi-channel stick time! I was smart enough to have someone else maiden the Triplane. It flew great until it ran out of gas and at a 45˚ glide, tore the landing gear off upon arrival. After I repaired it, I sold it and moved on to a more realistic trainer, a Proctor Antic. I flew that until it wore out, but got lots of stick time.

My first Scale meet was in Spokane’s scale Masters regional in 1982 flying a Proctor Nieuport II. Coming in “not last”, I learned a lot about scale competitions. Hooked on both flying and competing ever since.

I started judging Scale Masters meets in 1995. I qualified for the finals in 2010 with my scratch-built 1/3 scale Church Midwing having only flown 6 qualifying flights, again coming in “not last”.

I prefer scratch building to anything else, but a handful of good kits have ended up in my small collection. Of all the airplane genres, I like anything with LOTS of wings and wires (i.e. 1918 and earlier). Second would be Golden Age. When selecting a subject for contesting, I prefer something that has never or rarely shows up at the field. If I can’t find something rare at that time, I’ll build something a bit more familiar, but will try to find the most outlandish color scheme possible just to keep things interesting.

I’m hoping my time in office will be just as interesting.

Dave

Our Mission
The NWSAM exist to promote and provide support, resources/information for radio controlled scale aero-modellers, judges and event organizers for their success at any Local, National or World Scale Aero-Modelling event.

" The forum is about Learning, Fun and Sportsmanship while providing the opportunity to advance to competition."

Scale Aero-Modeling events provide a great "social venue" to meet people who share the common interest of building and flying scale airplanes. This is the biggest benefit you will receive when participating with enthusiasts at Scale Events nationally and internationally. Participating in scale events creates more purpose for improving your building and flying skills. Participation is easy as the program is graduated; designed to progress from 'Beginner to Expert levels'. Almost Ready to Fly airplanes (ARF's) & Almost Ready to Cover (ARC) are encouraged.
